Thiha ZAW - Korea University, Korea

"Started out with confusions on available courses and accommodation problems, I had initial doubts if I made a right decision on studying abroad in Korea as an exchange student as early as in second year of my studies at CUHK. But looking back at the passed challenges and lasting memories, I can confidently say that my exchange experience will remain as one of the best choices I made in my undergraduate years.
Instead of the student residence, I lived in a goshiwon, tiny one-bed rooms catered towards budget students and foreign temporary workers. Living outside the campus not only cut down the costs but also allowed me to experience what it is like to live in a Seoul neighborhood. I was able to explore nearby mainly-local suburbs in Korea, and explore little-known places like Naksan Park, a discreet family park made along the old city walls of Seoul.
The local student organization, Korea University Buddy Association, was very active in helping international students integrate into Korean culture and university community. Activities were held around the city for students to enjoy the local cultures and historic places and even a group trip to Jeju Island, a UNESCO natural heritage site famous for its giant lava tubes and rocky seaside scenery.
I was able to continue my love for hiking as Seoul has about as many good hiking spots as Hong Kong. Excluding small hills, I was able to climb the popular Bukhansan (836.5 meters) and Hallasan (1,950 meters), the latter being the tallest mountain in South Korea. Since I did hiking around the end of autumn I was able to enjoy the dry, temperate view in contrast to lush, green views of Hong Kong hiking trails.
Overall, the exchange experience in Korea was remarkable; I had a lot of time to travel around Korea and learn more about a different region of East Asia. I was able to improve my cultural adaptation skills and made many more contacts with exchange students from different parts of the world. Thus, I am thankful of Wu Yee Sun College and Korea University for providing this program and I hope upcoming students can enjoy much more benefits from this exchange opportunity."
