“In July and August 2019, I worked as a summer intern in John Swire & Sons (Swire) Summer Internship Programme. Through a comprehensive induction and various hands-on experiences, I learnt about the breadth of the Swire Group.
I was seconded to Cathay Pacific Airways, one of the operating companies. I was assigned to work in the Revenue Management Department. Besides from shadowing other colleagues and sitting in high-level meetings, I conducted market research on Cathay Pacific's network and partnership landscape in Europe and the United States. On top of that, I explored the use of fare rules in dynamic pricing.
To ensure that I have support every step on the way, Swire provided me with access to coaches and a management trainee buddy who will offer guidance and development feedback throughout the Programme. To wrap up, I worked with fellow interns on a group project, pitching an innovative proposal of a relocation service that utilizes the current capability of the Swire Group and creates a new revenue stream. Through the group presentation, we exhibited each person’s ability to assess future trends, to propose pragmatic solutions and to deliver an effective presentation to senior management.
Being a GLEF student, I have attended different courses to attain subject-specific skills that enable me to apply economic principles and models. I also gain an understanding of large driving forces that shape the markets. Also, I have acquired knowledge of financial instruments, markets and how a corporate formulate finance strategies through finance courses. Being a student of two academic streams, I am able to think logically, critically. Throughout the research studies, I was required to simplify complex issues and to extract the relevant pieces of information. Together with data analysis skills, I could work with data in different perspectives.
Moreover, both Faculties have provided resources for students to gain more exposure to the commercial and cultural world through courses of different themes, talks held by external speakers, while training students in job-hunting through workshops and interview practices.
It was a privilege to utilize my analytical skills and knowledge gained from previous courses in GLEF. I had the opportunity to develop and gain the skill sets and business acumen I need for a career in business.”
