‘I have joined the Insurance Authority as an intern last summer. I worked in the Conduct Supervision Team under the Market Conduct Division. My team mainly focuses on regulating insurance business conduct, ensuring fair treatment of customers through enforcing Insurance Ordinance and Conduct Principles. It uses training, inspections, and investigations to monitor compliance and protect policyholder interests.
During my internship, I acquired a thorough understanding of the insurance industry during my internship, including knowledge of different products, appropriate sales techniques, and features that safeguard customers. I also gained a deeper understanding of the role of the regulator in the market. The regulator utilizes tools such as inspection and cases investigation to uphold integrity and maintain market’s stability and effectiveness.
My technical and soft skills, especially in communication and presentation, greatly improved during the internship. I interacted with important individuals in the administration of insurance intermediaries, which improved my capacity to communicate difficult ideas succinctly and clearly. A particularly memorable experience was presenting a case to the leaders of the Market Conduct and Enforcement Department, showcasing my presenting skills and fostering agreement. Along with this, I took part in workshops and training programmes to improve both my technical and soft skills, such as risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and effective communication techniques. It was essential for my professional development to collaborate with seasoned experts who offered insightful viewpoints.
The Insurance Authority places a strong emphasis on teamwork among employees, and I had the good fortune to work with knowledgeable and experienced coworkers who were eager to share their knowledge with me. This tremendously helped me with my work and improved my comprehension of the market.
For students who are interested in learning about the responsibilities of a local regulator, I think the internship opportunity would be a great fit.’
