Natalie Chiu – JBA Capital Management

“I undertook a two-month internship as an Equity Research Intern at JBA Capital, a small-size hedge fund based in Taiwan. The main duties included creating equity reports, giving presentations on my report during the meeting each week, making recommendations about financial decisions and other ad-hoc tasks.

During the two-month internship, I had completed eight equity reports in total. To ensure that I can get more familiar with the market, my supervisor ensures that the equities she assigns to me are from different industries, which allows me to develop my interest and to have a deeper understanding to the whole market. To sum up, I have exposed myself to industries including cement, electronic components, financial, semiconductor, electrical equipment & parts.

I feel that during the internship, I was treated like a regular employee in JBA. It was a thorough training session for me, and I learned a lot about what an Equity Analyst does and how the hedge fund works. Furthermore, I have significantly improved my skills such as financial modelling, forecasting, financial analyzing, Excel skills and valuation.

The internship enables me to assure my interest towards the equity market and finds lots of aspects that really attract me. Equity research is not about simply inputting numbers but more about developing different points of out-of-consensus view. It is more dynamic in the equity market; it is changing every day and there are always different things happening in the market. Thus, I feel like I am expanding my knowledge base day by day.

Thanks a lot to JBA, though it is a small company, I gained a lot of practical experience, formed close relationship with the company and be more certain about the future career that I would like to develop.

Majoring in GLEF leads me to learn a great deal about how money works, and about financial instruments, stocks, bonds, markets, how macroeconomics and microeconomics work. These knowledges allow me to determine information and advice regarding my duties during internship.

4 years in GLEF has been an exceptional journey beyond my imagination. The integrative structure of the program enables me to develop my own interest and cultivate my competency to face the competitive society. The interdisciplinary courses have cultivated me with essential financial knowledge required for future careers and at the same time, understand the global economy on both macro and micro basis. The program offers a lot of opportunities and resources that students can take advantages of, from the financial trading lab, internship sharing session to the massive job opportunities provided.

One of the most things that I admired is that GLEF does not aim to train students to merely expertise in finance yet upon that, to equip students to have the ability to think logically and critically independently. Most importantly, the small size of the program allows me to get close with brilliant people from all over the world, help out each other and share information. The program director and staffs are also friendly and always eager to provide assistance. It was a tough journey, but as long as you are willing to work hard, you will find harvard plump at the end of the journey.”
