‘In the summer break of year three, I joined Wave Insight Limited, a start-up which works on financial online platform and investment, for 3 months. Although it is just a small start-up, the internship has given me more than I anticipated and will definitely be an asset to my career development.

During the internship, I was assigned to the Investment & Research Department. My main job duty was mainly on conducting industry research and equity research for investment funds. Moreover, I was also assigned to present analysis of ESG fund performance and recommended changes to fund strategy and weights. Besides, I was also given chances to work on tasks I have never expected to do: Do podcasts on topics about stock performances and global financial news. 

Not only did the 3-month internship experience deepen my knowledge in the finance industry, strengthen my research, analysis skills and interpersonal skills, but more importantly, it also gave me a new path for career planning. 

Although working in start-up may not be a desirable option for many of us, the lessons learnt from it should never be downplayed. Working in start-up allowed me to take up more responsibilities on handling different tasks. The diversity of job duties further trained me to perform better in finance industry. 

It would be a shame that I did not get enough tine working with my colleagues in the office as my company adopted “Work-from-home” mode during the pandemic. However, my colleagues were still so helpful and considerate that they were so willing to instruct me on work difficulties.

I would like to credit to GLEF Program for setting up a good study scheme which equipped me with fundamental knowledge that helped me excel the tasks. Courses like ACCT 1111, FINA 2010, FINA 3080, ECON 3140, DSME 2021 and MGNT 2610 built up a solid foundation for my technical knowledge. With the pre-understandings, I could handle the tasks better which benefited my work performance.’
