‘During the summer of 2023, I engaged in a transformative internship as a Fund Operations Intern at Elephas Investment Management Limited. This opportunity was made possible through my participation in the WAM Pilot Programme, an initiative by the HKSAR Government aimed at enhancing talent training for the asset and wealth management sector. Motivated by prior front-office roles in asset management, I sought to broaden my understanding of investment processes beyond research. Opting for middle and back-office roles, I aimed to comprehend post-execution and operational facets. My aspiration is to pursue a career in asset management with a comprehensive grasp of various divisions.
Elephas Investment Management Limited is a hedge fund manager with headquarters in Shanghai and offices in both Shanghai and Hong Kong. The firm manages five funds, employing Long/Short Equity, Quantitative and Global Macro investment strategies. As a Fund Operations Intern, I undertook responsibilities ranging from trade settlement, daily cash and position reconciliation to risk reporting for multiple hedge funds. Proficiency in Excel VBA and significant growth in soft skills, including effective communication and adaptability, marked key achievements during the internship. The intimate setting at Elephas, a smaller firm, fostered stronger connections between colleagues and provided a holistic understanding of operations and trading team dynamics.
This internship has not only deepened my understanding of the multifaceted importance of operations but has also influenced my preferences for the job nature, culture, and size of the firm where I plan to pursue my graduate career. Through this enriching experience, I am better equipped for the transition from academia to the professional world.’
